Los Angeles police have arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the sexual assault of a woman in North Hollywood on July 19, authorities announced Monday.
The suspect, Rodrigo Melgar, was taken into custody around 10 a.m. on Burbank Boulevard near Topanga Canyon Boulevard, according to a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) news release. He has been booked on suspicion of sexual penetration with a foreign object.
The assault occurred around 8:30 p.m. on July 19, when the victim was walking home from a gym in the North Hollywood area. Police reported that Melgar approached her from behind, grabbed her by the hair, and pulled her to the ground before assaulting her with a foreign object. Witnesses interrupted the attack, causing the suspect to flee.
Investigation and Arrest Details
Detectives with the LAPD began canvassing the area, reviewing surveillance footage from approximately 50 businesses near the crime scene. On July 29, the department released a community alert flier, which generated multiple tips from the public and media. These leads led to Melgar’s identification on July 31.
Melgar was arrested Monday after a search warrant was served at his location. Investigators believe he may have additional victims or witnesses who have not yet come forward. Police noted that Melgar frequently used public transit, including local bus routes, as his primary means of transportation.
Police Statements and Community Response
LAPD Lieutenant Monique Valenzuela stated in a prepared release: “This arrest is the result of outstanding detective work, relentless determination, and the strong partnership between our investigators, the media, and the community. Our detectives never stopped pursuing every lead, and every tip we received brought us one step closer to identifying and apprehending this violent offender.”
Local residents expressed concern following the announcement. One area resident, Jessica Orazco, said: “It honestly made me feel kind of scary because I'm around the area, especially hearing it happened around the gym. It made me wonder if it's the gym that I go to.”
Ongoing Concerns and Safety Measures
Authorities continue to urge anyone with information about the case or potential additional victims to come forward. Detectives have indicated that Melgar may have targeted women outside other area gyms, though no further details have been confirmed.
The LAPD has not provided additional information about Melgar’s background or prior criminal history. The case remains under investigation as officials work to determine if there are further connections to other incidents.
