Democratic state Rep. Donavan McKinney defeated incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District primary on Tuesday, securing the Democratic nomination for the heavily Democratic seat.
With 79% of precincts reporting, McKinney held a 51.9% to 48.1% lead over Thanedar, according to unofficial results cited by multiple outlets. The Associated Press called the race early Wednesday morning, finalizing McKinney’s victory.
Michigan’s 13th District, which includes parts of Detroit and Wayne County, is a safe Democratic seat that voted for President Joe Biden by 41 percentage points over Donald Trump in the 2024 election. McKinney will face minimal Republican opposition in the November general election.
Primary Outcome and Campaign Dynamics
McKinney’s win marks a shift toward the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, with his campaign receiving endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). His platform included support for Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and ending U.S. military aid to Israel.
Thanedar, a two-term incumbent and former DSA member, had been endorsed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. His campaign raised approximately $4.7 million in cash on hand, including $2 million in personal loans to his campaign, while McKinney raised about $1.3 million.
Key Policy Divisions and Background
Thanedar left the DSA in October 2023, citing the organization’s failure to condemn Hamas following the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel. He stated at the time: “I can no longer associate with an organization unwilling to call out terrorism in all its forms.” McKinney, by contrast, has advocated for ending U.S. military aid to Israel and has not aligned with Thanedar’s stance on the conflict.
The race also highlighted differences in economic background. McKinney, a 34-year-old Detroit native who grew up in poverty, framed the election as “the many versus the money”, contrasting his background with Thanedar, a pharmaceutical executive who emigrated from India in 1979 and self-funded much of his campaign.
District Demographics and Historical Context
Michigan’s 13th District is a majority-Black constituency, and McKinney’s victory ensures continued Black representation in the seat. Thanedar became the first non-Black representative since 1955 when he won in 2022, a shift that drew criticism from some progressives who argued the district should maintain its historical demographic alignment.
Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) told Politico that representation in majority-Black districts should prioritize Black candidates: “You have a majority-Black district, and I think that there is certainly an appetite to see that again, or to at least make sure that a Black candidate has the opportunity to present themselves.”
General Election Outlook
With McKinney’s primary win, he is all but certain to win the seat in November. The district’s strong Democratic lean means his general election opponent, Republican nominee John Anthony, faces an uphill battle. Anthony has not yet released a detailed campaign platform.
McKinney will join the 119th Congress in January 2027, pending certification of the general election results.
