The Baltimore Orioles traded All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox on Monday’s trade deadline, capping a day of major moves that reshaped both teams’ rosters. Boston acquired Rutschman and catcher Jake Rogers in exchange for pitching prospects Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfielder Enddy Azocar, catcher Carlos Narvaez, and a player to be named later.
The trade marked the end of Rutschman’s tenure in Baltimore, where he spent his entire major league career after being selected first overall in the 2021 MLB Draft. The Orioles also sent starting pitcher Freddy Peralta to the Milwaukee Brewers and right-hander Kevin Gausman to the Atlanta Braves in separate deals.
Orioles teammates describe emotional farewell
Hours before the trade was finalized, Rutschman and teammates Gunnar Henderson, Colton Cowser, and Ryan Mountcastle had planned to attend a screening of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The group never made it to the theater. According to reports, Rutschman received the call from the Orioles’ front office while with his teammates, prompting an immediate and emotional goodbye.
Cowser, a fellow Orioles outfielder, recounted the moment in a media session the following day. “There was some shock there,” he said. “You could kind of see it on his face that something might have been brewing up. I guess you could say there's a little bit of shock factor. It was pretty emotional yesterday. I think that the initial shock of it was something that was tough to see. Definitely some sadness there, and all I could do was give him a hug and tell him that I'm here for him and I love him.”
Rutschman’s departure ends a four-and-a-half-year tenure in Baltimore, where he established himself as one of the game’s premier catchers. Cowser reflected on Rutschman’s impact, stating, “He's an exceptional talent, can hit from both sides of the plate, exceptional on defense, and someone who's been anchoring this team for the past four-and-a-half years. He's truly going to be missed here. And as a friend, he's someone who's grown really close to me.”
Rutschman’s legacy in Baltimore
Drafted out of Oregon State University, Rutschman quickly became the Orioles’ cornerstone player. Over his career, he earned three All-Star selections, won a Gold Glove, and helped lead the Orioles to the 2023 American League Championship Series. His offensive production included a .275 batting average, 70 home runs, and 289 RBIs in 393 games with Baltimore.
The Orioles’ decision to trade Rutschman reflects a broader organizational strategy amid a competitive window. The team also moved Freddy Peralta to Milwaukee and Kevin Gausman to Atlanta, signaling a potential rebuild phase despite recent postseason success.
Red Sox gain star catcher
Boston’s acquisition of Rutschman addresses a long-standing need behind the plate and adds a left-handed bat to the lineup. Rogers, a 28-year-old catcher with limited MLB experience, provides depth as the Red Sox aim to bolster their playoff push. The trade also includes four prospects, with Eyanson and Witherspoon representing the most prominent pitching assets heading to Baltimore.
The blockbuster moves come as MLB’s trade deadline passed at 6 p.m. ET on Monday, with several high-profile players changing teams in the final hours.
