The U.S. military has confirmed that no white phosphorus leak occurred at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, following a July 28 alert that prompted local evacuations.
On July 28, the Pyeongtaek city government issued emergency text messages advising residents to evacuate and avoid skin exposure, citing a suspected white phosphorus leak at the base. The alert was later lifted after the U.S. military reported completing decontamination work. City officials stated the evacuation notice was issued in consultation with the U.S. military, South Korean police, and emergency services.
The U.S. military’s statement on August 1 clarified that crystallization and residue detected during a routine munitions inspection were not white phosphorus and contained no traces of the substance. The military attributed the residue to non-hazardous surface corrosion from environmental exposure. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
Col. Ryan Ley, commander of the 51st Fighter Wing, stated, “We appreciate the city’s close partnership in keeping our community safe, and we thank everyone for their patience as our team worked to resolve this situation.”
White phosphorus is a highly flammable chemical used in military munitions and smoke shells, capable of burning at extremely high temperatures and causing severe injuries. The substance has been a subject of controversy due to its potential for civilian harm and environmental risks.
