Meta Platforms on Wednesday launched Muse Code, a new AI-powered coding agent designed to assist developers in writing, debugging, and validating software. The tool is powered by the company’s latest AI model, Muse Spark 1.2, and is positioned as a direct competitor to existing coding assistants such as Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex.
The release marks Meta’s formal entry into the AI coding market, where it joins a competitive landscape dominated by established players. Muse Code operates on a pay-as-you-go model, with pricing set at $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens. A discounted contributor tier is also available, offering reduced costs in exchange for data that may be used to improve Meta’s products.
The tool is currently available in beta, allowing developers to test its capabilities, including handling long, complex coding projects and running multiple sub-agents simultaneously to accelerate tasks. Meta stated that Muse Spark 1.2 and Muse Code were trained together to ensure seamless integration, and the system maintains a log of actions to resume work after interruptions.
How Muse Code compares to competitors
Meta’s pricing structure contrasts with subscription-based models used by competitors. Anthropic’s Claude Code is included in its Pro Plan ($20/month), while OpenAI’s Codex is available through ChatGPT Plus ($20/month). Meta’s contributor tier offers a lower-cost alternative, though it requires users to consent to data usage for product improvement.
Meta’s AI chief, Alexandr Wang, described Muse Code as “one of the most affordable coding agents on the market”, emphasizing its global availability. The company has not disclosed user adoption metrics for Muse Spark 1.2 but stated that adoption has been strong.
Strategic context and market positioning
The launch follows Meta’s broader push into AI monetization, as the company seeks to generate revenue from its investments in AI infrastructure. CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously indicated that developer tools were not a primary focus but did not rule out their inclusion in Meta’s AI strategy.
