William Orbit, the English musician and producer renowned for his work with Madonna on her 1998 album Ray of Light, died at his home on July 23. He was 69.
His family announced his death in an Instagram post on July 25, stating he died at home but did not specify a cause. The post read: “He will be greatly missed by us and by so many whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and kindness.”
Orbit, born William Wainwright in London in 1956, began his career in dance music and film soundtracks, including composing the score for the 1986 hockey film Youngblood. His collaboration with Madonna began during a period of personal transformation for the pop star, who had recently given birth and explored spiritual practices. Together, they crafted Ray of Light, an album that blended guitars, synths, and club beats into a distinctive sound.
The album, which sold more than 4 million copies in the U.S., produced hit singles such as “Frozen,” “The Power of Good-Bye,” and the title track. Ray of Light earned a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album and a nomination for Album of the Year, marking Madonna’s sole nomination in that category. Orbit won three Grammys over his career.
In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, Orbit emphasized Madonna’s role in the album’s production, stating: “When it says ‘produced by Madonna and William Orbit,’ people don’t always give her the credit for that. But she’s as responsible as me.”
Orbit and Madonna reunited for the 1999 single “Beautiful Stranger”, featured in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and later collaborated on an electro-pop cover of Don McLean’s “American Pie” for the 2000 film The Next Best Thing.
Beyond Madonna, Orbit worked with Blur, U2, and All Saints, contributing to their musical projects. Tributes poured in from colleagues, including DJ Sonique, who wrote: “He was one of the first people I ever worked with. I am so sad to hear this.” Other artists, such as DJ Abel and Darren Emerson, shared similar sentiments, reflecting Orbit’s impact on the music industry.
