The attack occurred in Marion County’s Silver River, where the victim was among a group of swimmers when an alligator approached. She attempted to fend off the animal with a paddle, but the gator seized her arm and dragged her underwater. Nearby boater John Gamache, who was on the river with his father, witnessed the commotion and immediately raced toward the group. The approaching boat startled the alligator, which released the woman and fled. Gamache and his father then secured the injured swimmer’s bleeding arm with rope from their boat and transported her to a nearby boat launch, where first responders were waiting.
The woman was taken to a hospital and later released, according to her family. Trappers later located and removed a 9-foot-8-inch alligator from the area, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reported. The Silver River was temporarily closed and has since reopened to the public.
