The Los Angeles Dodgers secured a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday, overcoming a late deficit to salvage Tarik Skubal’s Dodger Stadium debut in front of the home crowd.
Skubal delivers in first home start
Tarik Skubal, acquired from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline, made his first start in a Dodgers uniform at Dodger Stadium. The left-handed pitcher threw five innings, allowing four hits, three runs, and striking out six batters. His performance followed his club debut against the Chicago Cubs on August 4, where he also struck out six in six innings while permitting two earned runs.
The Dodgers, who entered the game having lost eight of their last nine contests, including sweeps by the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, needed a late offensive surge to secure the win. Max Muncy’s bases-loaded double in the sixth inning gave Los Angeles a 5-3 lead, its first of the game. However, the Royals tied the score in the seventh on a two-run homer by Kyle Isbel.
Freeman’s go-ahead RBI single in seventh
Freddie Freeman broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh with a single to right field that scored Shohei Ohtani, putting the Dodgers ahead for good. Freeman’s hit followed a 10-hit performance by the Dodgers, a notable improvement after struggles against fastballs earlier in the season.
Manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the team’s recent struggles, stating, “We’re a wild-card team right now. We’ve got to get going and play with urgency.” The Dodgers’ offense had struggled to produce runs, particularly against fastballs, but Monday’s game marked a shift in performance.
Skubal’s trade-deadline impact
Skubal, a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner with Detroit, has been a key addition for the Dodgers since the trade deadline. His arrival generated significant anticipation, with manager Roberts calling him “something special” before his club debut. Skubal’s Dodger Stadium debut drew additional attention due to a new shuttle service for Japanese fans, operated by JTB, which offers bilingual tours to Dodger games.
Looking ahead
The Dodgers will continue their series against the Royals on Tuesday, with left-hander Blake Snell set to return from the 60-day injured list to make his next start.
The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for Los Angeles, though the team remains in a tight playoff race as the regular season progresses.
