A 20-year-old former collegiate swimmer was formally charged on Friday with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and indecent exposure in connection with the fatal beating of a 63-year-old security guard in Maui. Legend Storer, who was arrested in the early hours of August 5, pleaded not guilty to the charges in court records reviewed by The L.A. Times.
The incident unfolded at the Sands of Kahana condominium resort in Lahaina, where surveillance footage captured an unclothed man arriving at the property around 1:45 a.m. and assaulting the guard before fleeing. The victim, Michael Dyer, was found unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead by medical personnel shortly after 5:30 a.m., according to Maui police.
Storer, a resident of Lahaina, was taken into custody after officers responded to reports of a naked man with numerous abrasions in the nearby Kahana neighborhood. He was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for evaluation before his arrest. Prosecutors allege the assault was carried out using a 5-gallon water bottle.
Storer’s legal team has not responded to requests for comment, and no motive has been disclosed by authorities. Court records indicate he was a two-time swimming champion in Hawaii’s Maui Interscholastic League and competed for the Concordia University Irvine swim team during the 2024-25 academic year. He graduated from Maui Preparatory Academy in 2024, according to the university’s website.
Maui police confirmed the incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. on August 5, when a dispatcher received a report of a naked man wandering through the Kahana neighborhood. The area is described as a scenic beachfront community on Maui’s northwest coast. Officers later linked Storer to the resort assault through surveillance footage and subsequent investigation.
The case remains under active prosecution, with no further details released by law enforcement at this time.
