A former Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy killed his ex-girlfriend and then himself on Monday after an argument over a television, authorities confirmed. The incident left two children without their mother and has prompted an investigation into the deputy’s actions.
Deputy Troy Savetz, 47, was waiting outside the home of Mandy Fackler, 35, when she and her two children returned from a day at the beach around 5:30 p.m., according to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. Savetz, who had been with the sheriff’s office for 14 years and was part of the marine unit, allegedly brandished a firearm and demanded his television set back. When Fackler attempted to call 911, Savetz took her phone and instructed her children to go inside, where they remained unharmed.
About 90 minutes after the altercation began, authorities located Savetz’s vehicle with Fackler inside. Savetz was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while Fackler was pronounced dead at the scene. The children, aged 12 and 9, called 911 and provided dispatchers with details that helped identify Savetz as the suspect, according to Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco.

Authorities deployed K-9 teams, drones, and aviation units to locate the vehicle, which was found abandoned with the driver’s door open. Fackler’s phone was recovered at the scene, and investigators confirmed she was no longer present when officers arrived.
