Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce publicly endorsed the team’s offensive improvements under new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, contrasting his current approach with the tenure of former OC Matt Nagy. In remarks to reporters, Kelce highlighted Bieniemy’s emphasis on accountability and intensity, calling it a missing element during Nagy’s three-season tenure as OC.
Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, has shown strong recovery progress from a torn ACL and LCL suffered late last season, according to teammates and coaches. Kelce described Mahomes as fully engaged in training camp, competing at a high level without apparent limitations from the injury.
Chiefs’ Offensive Evolution Under Bieniemy
Kelce’s comments followed observations about the Chiefs’ offensive performance under different coordinators. Under Bieniemy, the Chiefs’ offense ranked first in total offense three times, third once, and sixth once over five seasons. In contrast, under Nagy, the offense ranked ninth, 17th, and 20th during his tenure. Bieniemy’s offenses averaged 406 yards of total offense and 30.1 points per game, while Nagy’s averaged 332.6 yards and 24.4 points per game.
Kelce emphasized Bieniemy’s accountability-driven leadership, stating, “His accountability is going to piss you off, but if you treat it the right way… you’re going to become better for it.” He added that the Chiefs “really missed” that intensity during Nagy’s tenure.
Mahomes’ Recovery and Team Outlook
Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL in Week 14 of last season, contributing to the Chiefs’ worst record (6-11) in his era. However, Kelce and other teammates have reported no lingering effects from the injury. Kelce called Mahomes a “brother” and praised his resilience, noting that he is “enjoying the game, competing at a high level, and not thinking about the knee.”
Former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez expressed optimism about the team’s potential return to dominance, citing Mahomes’ health, a revamped running game, and Kelce’s decision to return for a 14th season. Gonzalez stated, “I really do think Patrick Mahomes is going to have a great year… They still got really good receivers.”
The Chiefs open their season against the Denver Broncos on September 14 at Arrowhead Stadium, with Mahomes expected to start. Kelce, now 36, signed a one-year, $12 million contract to return for 2026, citing his relationship with Mahomes as a key factor in his decision.
