The Tacoma Police Department announced the completion of a six-day operation to rescue 60 cats and kittens from an abandoned 40-foot sailboat off Owen Beach in Washington. The operation, which began on August 6, involved coordination between the Marine Services Unit, Animal Control, and the department’s Forensics Unit to safely remove the animals from the vessel.
Officers initially discovered more than 30 cats and kittens living in unsafe conditions aboard the abandoned sailboat. Over the course of the six-day effort, the final count of rescued animals reached 60, with authorities stating they were "as certain as they can be that all cats have officially disembarked."
Final checks and precautions
Despite confirming the removal of all 60 cats, police noted that felines are known for hiding in small spaces, prompting continued precautionary visits to the boat. A Tacoma Police spokesperson stated, "While we believe we have safely removed all of the cats from the boat, as any cat owner knows, cats are exceptionally good at hiding. Because there is always a possibility that a cat may remain onboard, our work isn't quite finished."
Authorities obtained a search warrant to conduct additional searches and have initiated the process of having the legally registered vessel moved. The Marine Services Unit requested that beachgoers and boaters notify Animal Control if they observe any additional cats aboard the vessel.
Conditions aboard the sailboat
Officials described the conditions on the sailboat as unsafe for the animals, with many appearing frightened and malnourished. The rescue operation prioritized the welfare of the cats, ensuring their safe removal and subsequent care. The department shared updates on social media, including a final message: "That's a wrap!
