A 17-year-old Massachusetts teen has been charged with two counts of murder following the deaths of his mother and younger brother, authorities confirmed Wednesday. The Middlesex District Attorney’s office alleges the suspect, Arjun Aravind, used artificial intelligence to research violent fantasies prior to the killings.
On Tuesday evening, Acton police responded to a welfare check at the family home on Martha Lane after the teen’s father reported he could not reach his wife or son. Officers found Sudha Venkatesan, 45, in the basement and Siddharth Aravind, 14, on the first floor, both with signs of trauma. The suspect was not present at the time of the discovery.
Arjun Aravind was located and arrested early Wednesday in a nearby Wayland parking lot after his mother’s 2014 green Honda Accord was found abandoned following an unrelated alarm. He was taken into custody without incident, according to prosecutors.
Investigation Details
Prosecutors allege the investigation uncovered evidence that Aravind had recently engaged in online activity described as “concerning behavior,” including searches on ChatGPT for “theoretical ideas or fantasies regarding killing his family.” The district attorney’s office stated these searches included inquiries about methods and scenarios involving harm to his relatives.
A tutor scheduled to visit the home on Tuesday was also unable to gain entry, prompting the father’s call to police. The victims’ last known interactions were recorded earlier in the day: Sudha Venkatesan was spoken to by her husband around 7 a.m., and Siddharth Aravind was last seen leaving a local recreation center around noon.
Legal Charges and Next Steps
Aravind faces two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery on a family member, and additional charges including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in Concord District Court for arraignment on Thursday.
The Middlesex County District Attorney’s office has not yet released details on the cause or manner of death, pending further forensic analysis. The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to reconstruct the events leading to the tragedy.
Community and Family Response
The Acton community has expressed shock and grief following the incident. Local officials have not provided further public statements beyond the initial charges and investigative updates. The family’s background, including Sudha Venkatesan’s profession and the family’s origins, has been referenced in some reports but remains unverified in official disclosures.
