A targeted explosion in Sevastopol, Crimea, killed a Russian military officer on Thursday, according to state-run Russian media. Russian authorities arrested a woman suspected of carrying out the attack, alleging she acted on instructions from Ukrainian intelligence agencies.
The blast occurred in a park off Stoletovsky Prospekt in western Sevastopol, where the officer was passing by when the device—placed in a trash can—was detonated remotely. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) attributed the attack to the suspect, who was detained shortly afterward. Russian officials did not publicly name the officer killed in the explosion.
Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev of Sevastopol confirmed the arrest of a woman born in 1994, stating she showed “no remorse” and had acted under orders from Ukrainian special services. The FSB claimed the suspect had planted the bomb in coordination with Ukrainian intelligence, though Ukraine has not publicly responded to the allegations.
In a separate incident in Sevastopol, five people—four Russian service members and one security guard—were killed when an explosive device detonated while they attempted to clear an area of Ukrainian bombs following an earlier attack, Razvozhayev reported. The governor did not specify the origin of the bombs being cleared.
The explosions mark the latest in a series of attacks in Crimea, a region annexed by Russia in 2014 and now a key target of long-range Ukrainian strikes since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Sevastopol, home to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters, has faced repeated Ukrainian assaults, including a 2023 cruise missile strike that severely damaged the fleet’s headquarters building.
Russian authorities have previously blamed Ukraine for multiple assassinations, including the deaths of two Russian generals in Moscow in April and December 2025. Ukraine has not commented on these claims or the latest incidents in Crimea.
