Kyle Schwarber launched two home runs into the cornfield outfield as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Minnesota Twins 4-2 in the 2025 MLB Field of Dreams game on Thursday in Dyersville, Iowa. The game, held at the iconic site from the 1989 film, featured a Hall of Fame tribute before play began.
Byron Buxton returned from injury to start for the Twins, marking his first appearance since being reinstated from the injured list earlier in the day. Buxton, batting second in the lineup, went 0-for-4 as Minnesota fell to 60-62 on the season. The Twins remain three games behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central and half a game out of the final American League wild-card spot.
Schwarber’s first-inning home run set the tone for Philadelphia, which jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The Twins responded in the second with a run of their own, but the Phillies added two more in the third and fourth innings to secure the victory. Luke Keaschall’s RBI single in the second tied the game briefly before Schwarber’s second homer in the third broke the tie.
A group of 26 Hall of Fame players, including Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt (Phillies), Joe Mauer, Bert Blyleven, and Jim Kaat (Twins), participated in a pregame walk through the cornfield. Modern inductees Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent were also among the legends honored. The game was broadcast on Netflix, marking the first time the event aired on the streaming platform.
Buxton, a three-time All-Star, has battled injuries throughout his career but remains one of baseball’s premier outfielders when healthy. He entered the game batting .263/.320/.544 with 25 home runs in 82 games this season. His return to the lineup shifted Keaschall from center field to right, with Minnesota hoping his presence provides a boost in their playoff push.
The Phillies improved to 70-52 with the win, maintaining their lead in the NL East. Both teams now turn their attention to the postseason as the race for playoff spots intensifies.
