Suffolk County Police arrested 15 people under the age of 24 and impounded seven vehicles early Saturday after intercepting an attempted street takeover in Medford, Long Island.
The Street Takeover Task Force disrupted the gathering near Woodside Avenue and Sawgrass Drive just before 1 a.m., where authorities said multiple vehicles had effectively shut down the roadway by performing stunts, donuts, and burnouts. All 15 arrested were charged with participating in and spectating unlawful speed contests and are expected to appear in court at a later date.
The incident follows heightened monitoring by police, who tracked the group’s movements through social media and intelligence gathering after learning of a planned takeover in Suffolk County. Officers first disrupted attempted gatherings near Commack Road and Sunrise Highway in Islip, then near Route 112 and Main Street in Patchogue, before intercepting the group in Medford.
Enforcement and Charges
Suffolk County Police confirmed that 14 of the 15 suspects were charged with both participating in and spectating an unlawful speed contest. Seven vehicles were impounded as part of the operation. Police described the scene as a coordinated effort to block traffic and engage in dangerous driving maneuvers, which posed risks to bystanders and motorists.
The arrests come amid broader concerns about street takeovers nationwide, where large groups of drivers block roads and perform stunts, often drawing crowds and creating hazardous conditions. Authorities have increasingly deployed specialized task forces to monitor and disrupt such gatherings before they escalate.
Community and Law Enforcement Response
Local officials and police emphasized the dangers posed by street takeovers, citing the potential for accidents, injuries, and disruptions to public safety. The Suffolk County Police Department reiterated its commitment to addressing reckless driving and unauthorized gatherings through proactive enforcement and intelligence-led operations.
The incident in Medford follows similar crackdowns in recent weeks, as authorities across Long Island and other regions have stepped up efforts to curb street takeovers and related illegal activities. Police did not specify whether any bystanders were injured during the Medford incident, but they noted that the roadway was effectively closed for an extended period due to the reckless driving maneuvers.
