Lake Powell, the second-largest reservoir in the U.S., has reached its lowest recorded water level, prompting federal officials to propose significant water consumption cuts for Arizona, California, and Nevada. On August 15, Lake Powell’s water elevation dropped to 3,519.91 feet above sea level, surpassing the previous record set in April 2023. The lake has lost more than 20 feet in elevation since the start of 2024 and is now 60 feet lower than it was in January 2023, according to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). Lake Mead, which straddles Nevada and Arizona, hit its own record low a week earlier.
