Authorities in Arizona confirmed on Monday that human remains found approximately 15 miles from the home of missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie show no connection to her disappearance. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department stated there is no indication at this time that the remains, located in a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard, are related to Guthrie’s case.
The remains were discovered in response to a report filed with the sheriff’s department. Investigators noted the remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period of time, based on environmental conditions in the region. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department emphasized that the discovery does not alter the ongoing investigation into Guthrie’s disappearance.
Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Catalina Foothills home on February 1, after being last seen on January 31. She was reportedly kidnapped from her residence without her phone or critical medications. The case has drawn significant public attention, with Guthrie’s daughter, Savannah Guthrie, a co-host of NBC’s Today show, issuing multiple pleas for information.
In July, nearly six months after Guthrie’s disappearance, authorities released two ransom notes purportedly written by her abductors. The notes claimed Guthrie had died, though investigators have not confirmed their authenticity. The sheriff’s department continues to analyze DNA evidence collected at Guthrie’s home and has not identified a motive for the kidnapping.
The sheriff’s department has appealed to the public for information, including the masked prowler captured on Guthrie’s doorbell camera outside her home around the time she went missing. A $1 million reward remains available for credible leads.
Environmental factors in southern Arizona contribute to the frequency of skeletal remains discoveries. Pima County’s Chief Medical Examiner, Greg Hess, noted that the region’s hot, dry climate accelerates decomposition, making such findings more common. The county handles approximately 4,500 death investigations annually and maintains a large repository of unidentified skeletal remains, many linked to migrants who perish in the Sonoran Desert.
Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the remains, including their estimated time of death or whether they have been identified. The investigation into Guthrie’s disappearance remains active, with no confirmed suspects or definitive leads at this time.
