Philadelphia police are searching for a masked suspect accused of assaulting a jogger and making terroristic threats in Center City last week. The suspect, described as a male between 16 and 20 years old, remains at large after the incident near City Hall on August 12 at approximately 5:30 a.m. Authorities have released surveillance footage and images to aid in the investigation.
Police confirm assault and terroristic threats
Philadelphia police reported that the suspect, wearing a Chucky-style horror mask, chased a 40-year-old female jogger near 1500 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, where he allegedly made threatening comments and held a phone in front of her while asking, “Are you ready to die?” The jogger stumbled and sustained injuries during the encounter. Police have charged the suspect with harassment, terroristic threats, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and intimidation.
The suspect was last seen entering SEPTA’s Suburban Station after the attack. Investigators believe he may have targeted additional victims that morning, as witnesses reported similar behavior toward others in the area. A security guard intervened during one such incident at a nearby coffee shop, preventing further harm.
Description of the suspect
Authorities describe the suspect as a male approximately 5-foot-8 inches tall, wearing a white baby doll-style Halloween mask with black hair and a black/blue plaid backpack. No weapon was observed, though police noted the suspect implied he had one. The suspect’s age range and distinctive mask have become key identifiers in the manhunt.
Community response and ongoing investigation
Residents and commuters in Center City have expressed concern over the incidents, describing the attacks as “disturbing” and “unsettling.” Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith emphasized the importance of public vigilance, urging anyone who sees the suspect to contact 911 immediately rather than approaching. The investigation remains active, with no arrests made as of the latest update.
