A private Bell 206 helicopter crashed near a landing pad on the Greek island of Sifnos on Monday, killing three people: newlyweds Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, along with their pilot, Giorgos Raikos.
Greek aviation authorities have launched an investigation into the crash, which occurred just before the scheduled landing time of 18:15 local time (16:15 GMT). The aircraft suffered a mechanical failure, according to reports, and CCTV footage shows the helicopter spinning erratically before descending rapidly and exploding in a fireball upon impact. Residents near the helipad reported hearing an unusual noise from the aircraft prior to the crash.
Immediate Response and Investigations
Greece’s National Organisation for the Investigation of Air and Railway Accidents and Transport Safety has begun examining the wreckage, with investigators arriving at the scene on Tuesday to gather evidence and interview witnesses. The Greek Ministry of Transport confirmed the probe, while local officials described the crash site as a “shapeless mass” with the victims’ remains inside.
The Foreign Office stated it is providing consular support and remains in contact with Greek authorities. A spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the families during this difficult time.”
Victims’ Backgrounds
The couple, believed to be in their early 30s and residing in London, were on their honeymoon at the time of the crash. Alexander Cromie worked as a vice president of private wealth solutions at Blackstone’s London office, while Marie Ebert was a senior specialist at Bain & Company.
Both companies issued statements expressing shock and extending condolences to the families. Blackstone stated: “We are shocked by the tragic passing of three people including our colleague Alex Cromie and his wife Marie Ebert, who were celebrating their honeymoon.” Bain & Company similarly expressed grief, saying: “Our thoughts and support are with the families involved at this very difficult time.”
The pilot, Giorgos Raikos, 55, was identified as a retired Greek Air Force officer with extensive experience, including piloting military Chinook helicopters. He was married with three children.
Circumstances of the Crash
The helicopter, operating as a private air taxi, had taken off from Markopoulo near Athens en route to Sifnos. According to the Athens daily newspaper Ta Nea, the pilot transmitted a message indicating he was preparing to land, but radio contact was lost immediately afterward.
CCTV footage captured the final moments of the flight, showing the helicopter spinning uncontrollably before plummeting to the ground. Witnesses described hearing a loud, unusual noise, described by one official as resembling the sound of military aircraft.
The crash occurred in the Tholos area of Sifnos, near a designated helipad. Local deputy mayor Manolis Fountoulakis arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and reported that the wreckage was completely destroyed, with the victims’ remains inside. Smoke and flames were visible from the crash site, which was located on an arid hillside.
Ongoing Developments
Investigators are reviewing all available evidence, including CCTV footage, witness statements, and the aircraft’s black box data, if recovered. The cause of the mechanical failure has not yet been determined. The aviation safety authority has not released further details pending the completion of their assessment.
