The Los Angeles Chargers sustained multiple injuries during a joint practice session with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, with starting center Tyler Biadasz the most severe case after being carted off the field following a collision in an 11-on-11 drill.
Biadasz’s left leg was trapped under 49ers defensive tackle Sebastian Valdez, who fell on him during the drill. The injury left Biadasz unable to bear weight on the leg, prompting immediate medical attention and his removal from the field. The team has not yet provided an update on the severity of the injury.
Rookie offensive lineman Jake Slaughter replaced Biadasz at center. Slaughter, who is among the candidates to play left guard, expressed his reaction to the incident: “Yeah, man, that hurt me. He’s been nothing but a wonderful mentor. We’re hoping and praying he’s in a good spot, and it’s nothing serious.”
Two other Chargers players also exited practice early. Outside linebacker Kyle Kennard limped off the field with a trainer, while wide receiver Quentin Johnston received treatment after attempting a leaping catch, appearing to suffer a lower-body injury.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert addressed Biadasz’s injury in a post-practice news conference, stating: “Obviously praying for the best. I don’t know exactly what happened. And I haven’t heard the report back.”
The Chargers’ offensive line has been a recurring concern in recent seasons. Starting offensive tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt missed significant time last year due to injuries, leaving the team to navigate the season with backups. Biadasz, who signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Chargers this offseason, now faces an uncertain timeline for his return.
Slaughter, who could potentially start at center if Biadasz is sidelined, emphasized his readiness: “I take it as a blessing that I can help the team in any way that I can.”
The Chargers are scheduled to face the 49ers in Week 2 of the preseason at SoFi Stadium, where the team’s depth on the offensive line may be tested.
Background: Biadasz’s Career Path
Biadasz began his NFL career as a fourth-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. After four seasons in Dallas, he signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Washington Commanders in 2024. During the 2025 season, he earned a 70.8 overall PFF grade, ranking 10th among 40 qualified centers, while allowing 21 total pressures, including three sacks and zero hits. However, knee and ankle injuries landed him on injured reserve in 2025, and he was released by the Commanders with one year remaining on his contract before joining the Chargers.
