Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) has publicly urged Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to appear on camera or post a video update, stating that the senator has ‘absolutely refused’ to do so amid ongoing concerns about his health.
McConnell, who is retiring from the Senate, was discharged from a rehabilitation center on August 6 after a fall on June 14 and a subsequent ‘mild case’ of pneumonia. He has provided written statements and two photos with his wife but has not specified a timeline for returning to work.
Beshear, during an interview on CBS News’ ‘Face the Nation’ on Sunday, criticized McConnell’s silence, stating that Kentuckians deserve clarity. ‘His boss are the people of Kentucky,’ Beshear said, adding that the Republican-controlled Senate feels ‘broken’ due to a perceived lack of accountability.
Beshear also criticized Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), asserting that Thune has a ‘duty’ to ensure the caucus functions effectively.
McConnell’s office has not responded to requests for further updates, despite Beshear’s earlier letter requesting a ‘full update’ on the senator’s condition. The letter, addressed to McConnell, expressed concern over ‘increasing speculation’ in the media.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), however, has dismissed the calls for more details, stating that he ‘doesn’t understand the buzz’ over McConnell’s health. Paul noted that McConnell had already announced his retirement a year prior and that aging-related health issues are common.
McConnell, a childhood polio survivor, has faced scrutiny over the lack of transparency regarding his hospitalization and recovery. Conservative commentators on social media have also called for more direct communication from the senator.
As of now, McConnell has not indicated when he plans to resume his Senate duties.
