The US Army has issued a formal request to defense contractors to identify suppliers capable of sourcing rare or obsolete parts for Ukraine’s M2A2 ODS-SA Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, according to a recently published notice.
The US Army Contracting Command - Detroit Arsenal posted a sources-sought notice on September 5, seeking firms that can either immediately provide the required components or demonstrate a viable plan to locate or reproduce them. The notice emphasizes the need to address vendor obsolescence and supply chain bottlenecks affecting legacy defense systems.
Interested contractors must show they can supply or replicate highly specialized, variant-specific parts, including turret drive control units, transmission control modules, ammunition chutes, specialized target-acquisition-system hardware, military-grade lens lights, and vehicle fasteners. The Army also requests proposals for training Ukrainian mechanics, along with the necessary equipment and materials for such training.
The M2A2 ODS-SA Bradley is a modernized variant of the M2 Bradley, which first entered US military service in the 1980s. Ukraine has received these vehicles through arms transfers, though not the newer M2A3 or M2A4 variants. Since their deployment, the Bradleys have been used in multiple roles, including transporting assault infantry, engaging Russian armor, conducting ambushes, and serving in a light-tank capacity. However, the vehicles have also sustained losses during operations.
The notice highlights the challenges posed by legacy system maintenance, noting that some components are no longer produced by original manufacturers, creating significant hurdles for repair and sustainment efforts. Firms responding to the request must outline how they would navigate these supply chain constraints while ensuring timely delivery of parts to support ongoing operations.
The US Army’s move underscores the broader logistical and industrial challenges associated with sustaining foreign military equipment in active conflict zones. Maintaining operational readiness for these vehicles is critical to Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid the ongoing war with Russia.
