Hayden Panettiere, 36, was found unresponsive in a South Carolina apartment on Sunday, with emergency responders declaring her dead at 2:31 p.m. after attempts to revive her failed. Police confirmed no signs of foul play, though a dispatcher noted a suspected overdose during a 911 call, and Narcan, a medication used to treat opioid overdoses, was reportedly found at the scene. Panettiere’s on-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was present at the time of her death, along with his brother, according to police reports.
Hayden Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, released a statement on Wednesday addressing her daughter’s death, asserting that a ‘toxic individual’ contributed to their estrangement and ultimately led to Panettiere’s death. Vogel did not name the individual but later identified Hickerson in an interview with NBC News, stating her family had been attempting to remove him from Panettiere’s life for an extended period. Vogel emphasized that the estrangement was not due to a lack of care or love but rather the influence of this individual.
Hickerson, through his attorney Sloan Ellis, issued a statement on Thursday acknowledging Panettiere’s death and urging respect for the ongoing investigation. Ellis confirmed that police had found no signs of foul play but declined to provide further comment, citing the need to allow the investigation to proceed. Hickerson was at the apartment where Panettiere died, according to police records, which noted that emergency responders observed no obvious physical reasons for her unresponsiveness before declaring her dead.
Panettiere, known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, had a history of struggles with alcohol addiction and depression. Her relationship with Hickerson, which spanned from 2018 to 2022, was marked by domestic violence incidents and arrests, including Hickerson serving jail time for abuse. In recent months, they had been seen together again. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the official cause of death, though a dispatcher’s report indicated a cardiac arrest, and sources told TMZ that Narcan was found on a mattress at the property. Panettiere would have turned 37 on Friday.
