Taylor Sheridan, creator of the hit series Yellowstone, has revealed that his purchase of a $330 million ranch in Texas prevented him from retiring and prompted a major career shift.
In a recent appearance on the Rodeo Time podcast, Sheridan discussed how the acquisition of the Four Sixes Ranch altered his plans. He had previously intended to retire after completing Yellowstone, having already purchased a smaller ranch in Weatherford, Texas, for which he paid in full. "I was set up to retire," Sheridan said. "I was going to be done after Yellowstone."
The Four Sixes Ranch, which served as a filming location for Yellowstone, was previously owned by Anne Marion. After her death, Sheridan learned the ranch was set to be divided and sold. However, Marion’s estate sought someone to "maintain her vision," leading them to approach Sheridan. The $330 million price tag posed a challenge, as Sheridan noted he was "about $300 million short." This prompted him to reconsider a previously resisted exclusivity deal with Paramount.
Sheridan explained that Paramount had been urging him to sign an overall deal, fearing he might leave for another studio. "They were terrified that I was going to go to greener pastures and leave them and go somewhere else," he said. After the ranch purchase, Sheridan contacted Paramount and negotiated a new agreement. According to reporting from Puck in 2025, Sheridan is now set to leave Paramount for NBCUniversal, though no official confirmation has been provided.
The Ranch’s Legacy and Future Plans
Sheridan emphasized that the Four Sixes Ranch was not merely a financial investment but a commitment to preserving Marion’s legacy. He noted that ensuring the ranch’s general manager stayed on and his son took on future responsibilities were critical factors in his decision. "I knew that if I bought this ranch, I was not going to be quitting my day job for a while," he said.
Sheridan’s career trajectory has been closely tied to his work on Yellowstone, which has become a major success for Paramount. His decision to expand his involvement with the studio reflects both personal and professional considerations, including the ranch’s operational demands and his ongoing creative projects.
Paramount’s Role and Future Partnerships
Paramount had pursued Sheridan for an exclusivity deal, concerned about losing him to competitors. Sheridan’s willingness to negotiate after the ranch purchase underscored his shift from retirement plans to continued industry engagement. While his departure to NBCUniversal has been reported, no official timeline or details have been confirmed by either studio.
