A raccoon was captured on video reaching through a hole in the bleachers at Citi Field to access leftover food during the New York Mets' game against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday. The incident occurred as fans dropped peanut shells, which the raccoon then retrieved with its paws. A hot dog was later handed to the animal, which accepted the offering.
The video, filmed by fan Scott Reynolds, shows the raccoon emerging from a small opening in the concrete seating area. Reynolds and his family were among those who observed the scene, describing it as an unexpected source of entertainment amid a challenging season for the Mets.
Citi Field, home of the Mets, is located near the former site of a scrap yard, which has been cited as a contributing factor to the presence of raccoons in the stadium. This is not the first instance of a raccoon being spotted in the stands; in May 2023, a raccoon was seen running up the steps during a rain-soaked game, prompting fans to flee.
The Mets, despite having the highest payroll in Major League Baseball this season, have struggled with a losing record, placing them last in the NL East. However, the team has shown recent improvement, winning five of their last six games, including a sweep of the Washington Nationals.
Raccoons are known for their adaptability and have been increasingly observed in urban environments, including sports venues. Their presence at Citi Field adds a lighthearted moment to an otherwise difficult season for the team and its fans.
