Far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker stated in a Wednesday interview with Channel 4 News UK that Hamas has become 'far more moderate' than at its inception, citing the group’s recognition of the "virtually impossible" nature of pursuing vengeance against Israel. Piker’s remarks, made during a segment of the program TrumpWorld, drew immediate condemnation from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) on Friday.
The ADL issued a statement calling Piker’s characterization "outrageous," asserting that Hamas remains a U.S.-designated terrorist organization responsible for the October 7 attack and ongoing abuses in Gaza. The group emphasized that Hamas is "committed to Israel’s destruction" and accused Piker of lending legitimacy to extremist rhetoric.
The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) similarly rejected Piker’s claim, with National Political Director Sam Markstein stating, "There is nothing ‘moderate’ about Hamas, and there is nothing defensible about Hasan Piker." Markstein also referenced Piker’s past statements, including his assertion that he would "vote for Hamas over Israel" and that Hamas was "a thousand times better than" the Jewish state. The RJC highlighted Piker’s past appearances with Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed as a point of contention.
Piker’s comments were made in response to questioning by Channel 4 News UK co-host Matt Frei, who confronted him over his previous praise of Hamas. During the interview, Piker argued that Hamas’s current stance reflects a shift from its earlier positions, though he did not provide specific examples of policy changes or reforms.
The ADL and RJC both warned that associating with or hosting Piker without challenge could normalize extremist rhetoric within progressive political circles. The ADL further stated that any platform lending legitimacy to such claims risks undermining efforts to counter antisemitism and terrorism.
Piker, a prominent progressive streamer and commentator, has faced repeated criticism for his past statements on Israel and Palestine. His remarks have contributed to ongoing debates within the Democratic Party regarding the boundaries of free speech, the influence of online personalities on political discourse, and the appropriate response to extremist groups.
The controversy follows heightened tensions in the Gaza conflict, with the October 7 attack by Hamas cited by critics as evidence of the group’s continued extremism. The ADL’s statement underscored Hamas’s role in the attack and its treatment of Palestinians in Gaza as key reasons for rejecting Piker’s characterization.
The RJC’s response also pointed to Piker’s past statements as indicative of a pattern of rhetoric that aligns with or excuses extremist violence. The group did not provide additional context regarding El-Sayed’s current stance on Hamas or Piker’s remarks.
No further statements from Piker or representatives of Hamas were immediately available following the backlash.
