Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon has distanced herself from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) platform despite being a member of the organization. Nixon, who won her primary election on Tuesday, explicitly rejected key DSA proposals such as abolishing the Senate and defunding the military during an interview with Meet the Press NOW on Thursday.
Nixon emphasized her alignment with DSA on issues like public housing, healthcare, and veterans' support, while clarifying her stance on contentious policies. She stated, “I joined the DSA because I believe in them in regards to fighting for adequate public housing, as well as fighting for quality healthcare, as well as making sure that we are getting our veterans off the street, taking big money out of politics.” Nixon also confirmed she does not support abolishing the Senate or defunding the military, though she called for greater scrutiny of defense spending.
Nixon’s primary victory over centrist Democrat Alex Vindman by 12 points marked a significant upset, with Vindman having outraised her 19-to-1. Nixon’s campaign focused on Medicare for All, universal childcare, and a national rent freeze, resonating with voters amid Florida’s affordability crisis. She has also opened a community space called Cafe Resistance in Jacksonville, which she describes as a hub for organizing and education.
Nixon’s DSA Membership and Platform
Nixon joined DSA in June 2024 and owns Cafe Resistance, a bookstore cafe she established to provide a safe space for political organizing. In a 2024 Instagram post, she cited attacks on freedoms, including book bans and restrictions on teaching Black history, as reasons for opening the shop. Her platform includes abolishing ICE, universal childcare, and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
During a campaign stop, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) endorsed Nixon, praising her as a candidate who represents a push for systemic change. Sanders criticized military spending and U.S. foreign policy toward Israel, aligning with DSA’s broader platform. However, Nixon has sought to distance herself from the socialist label, framing her policies as part of a broader progressive agenda within the Democratic Party.
Republican Response and General Election Outlook
Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, Nixon’s general election opponent, has framed Nixon’s DSA ties as evidence of far-left policies on crime, immigration, and taxes. The Republican National Committee has accused Nixon of embracing positions aligned with progressive activists, though Nixon has rejected the socialist characterization.
Nixon’s campaign has emphasized her focus on economic issues and grassroots organizing, positioning her as a candidate who can appeal to a broad coalition of Florida voters. Her primary victory has drawn national attention, with analysts noting her ability to unite progressive and working-class voters in a conservative-leaning state.
