New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith made his first preseason appearance in a Jets uniform on Friday night in Pittsburgh, completing all seven of his pass attempts for 65 yards and a 13-yard touchdown to tight end Jelani Woods on the opening drive.
Aaron Glenn, the Jets' head coach, described Smith’s performance as 'very, very efficient' and noted that the quarterback appeared 'very comfortable' in his return. Smith played only the opening series before rookie Cade Klubnik took over, but Glenn emphasized that Smith delivered 'exactly what we were looking for.'
Smith’s remarks following the game reflected a measured tone, with the veteran quarterback stating, 'I think we can always get better. There's always room for improvement, but we're always going to strive for perfection.' He added that he focuses on the process rather than highs or lows, describing his mindset as 'even-keeled.'
Smith’s return to the Jets marks a notable moment in his career, as he previously played for the franchise from 2013 to 2016 before departing and later revitalizing his career with the Seattle Seahawks. In Seattle, Smith completed 70.4% of his passes for 4,320 yards and 21 touchdowns in a single season, earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors two years prior to his return to New York.
The Jets’ decision to re-sign Smith this offseason was one of the more surprising moves of the NFL season, given his departure nearly a decade ago. His preseason debut generated immediate attention, though the performance was limited to a single drive. Smith’s ankle injury prevented him from participating in the Jets’ preseason opener earlier in the week.
Glenn’s post-game comments underscored the Jets’ cautious optimism about Smith’s role, particularly as the team looks to establish stability at quarterback. The coach’s emphasis on efficiency and comfort suggested a positive early impression, though he acknowledged that the sample size remained small.
Smith’s touchdown pass to Woods was the most notable play of the drive, though Glenn highlighted additional aspects of the performance, including two third-down completions and passes directed to five different receivers. The Jets’ offense, which includes rookie Cade Klubnik, will continue to develop as the preseason progresses.
The Jets’ next preseason game is scheduled for Thursday, August 14 against the Carolina Panthers at MetLife Stadium.
