Two police officers were shot and a suspect was killed late Friday after a pursuit and gunfire exchange in the Hartford area, authorities reported.
Two officers wounded, suspect dead after gunfire exchange in Connecticut pursuit
Hartford Police Officer Alex Diaz and Rocky Hill Police Officer Jon Escobar were struck by gunfire during an exchange in Newington, a town south of Hartford, police said. Both were transported to a hospital and later released, with Diaz discharged Saturday and Escobar recovering at home.
The incident began around 11:07 p.m. when Hartford officers were investigating what they described as illegal activity. A male suspect fled the scene, and an officer gave chase. During the pursuit, the officer reported feeling what was believed to be a firearm in the suspect’s waistband, according to Hartford police.
The suspect then entered a vehicle and drove away, prompting a multi-agency chase through Hartford and surrounding areas. The pursuit ended in Newington, where the suspect exited the car and an exchange of gunfire occurred.
Gun recovered at scene as investigation continues
A firearm was recovered at the location of the shooting, police confirmed. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect or disclosed details about the initial illegal activity under investigation.
The Connecticut Office of Inspector General has opened an investigation into the use of deadly force. Police stated that the circumstances of the gunfire, including which officers discharged their weapons, remain under review.
Both wounded officers are expected to recover, and authorities have not provided further updates on their conditions.
