Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing secured the pole position for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix on Saturday, Aug. 22, with a lap time of 56.899 seconds during qualifying trials. The achievement marked Palou’s seventh pole of the season and 19th of his career, giving him a commanding 133-point lead over second-place Kyle Kirkwood in the IndyCar championship standings.
The race, held on a seven-turn street circuit in Washington, D.C., saw multiple incidents during practice sessions. Rain and bumpy track conditions led to several drivers clipping the walls, including Marcus Ericsson, Rinus VeeKay, and Will Power. Graham Rahal and Louis Foster also suffered impacts in separate incidents, with both bringing out red flags in the final practice session. Scott McLaughlin of Team Penske recorded the fastest lap of the day at 56.895 seconds on primary tires.
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix featured a historic International Race of Champions (IROC) exhibition race, reuniting NASCAR legends such as Jeff Gordon, Bill Elliott, Bobby Labonte, Kurt Busch, and Rusty Wallace alongside IndyCar stars Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan. The IROC races, contested in 1990s- and 2000s-era Pontiac Firebirds, saw Gordon claim victories in both events, securing the 2026 IROC series title. Gordon, who retired from NASCAR in 2015, described the wins as “incredible” and emphasized the unique challenge of street circuit racing.
Palou now enters Sunday’s race with the opportunity to clinch his fifth IndyCar title if he extends his points lead to 163 points over Kirkwood. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is the first street circuit race for IndyCar in Washington, D.C., drawing over 140,000 spectators for the two-day event. Organizers reported strong attendance despite challenging weather conditions during the opening day of competition.
