BEIJING — China’s Chang’e-7 lunar mission, designed to search for water ice at the moon’s south pole, has been postponed after its launch did not meet safety requirements, the country’s space agency announced on Sunday.
The China Manned Space Agency stated the mission, which was scheduled to lift off in the coming days, cannot proceed during the planned window this year. The decision followed a comprehensive assessment based on principles of prudence, reliability, and absolute mission success, though no specific technical reasons were provided.
The mission had been prepared for launch from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan province, with the Chang’e-7 probe and Long March 5 carrier rocket already positioned at the launch area. As of Wednesday, officials reported the site and equipment were in good condition, with inspections ongoing.
The delay comes less than two weeks after a Chinese Long March 7A rocket failed during a separate launch, exploding 85 seconds into flight while carrying a communications satellite. The wreckage crashed into the South China Sea. This failure prompted heightened scrutiny of launch conditions, though the agency did not directly link the two events.
Mission Objectives and Context
The Chang’e-7 mission is part of China’s broader lunar exploration program, aiming to drill for water ice in permanently shadowed craters at the moon’s south pole — a region of strategic interest for both scientific and resource extraction purposes. The probe includes an orbiter, lander, rover, and hopper, designed to conduct environmental and resource surveys.
China has invested billions in its space program, with President Xi Jinping emphasizing the country’s “space dream.” The mission was intended to advance China’s goal of landing taikonauts on the moon by 2030, positioning it in direct competition with the United States, which is pursuing a similar timeline under NASA’s Artemis program.
International Space Race
The U.S. and China are racing to establish a presence at the lunar south pole, where water ice is believed to exist in significant quantities. While NASA has detected water remotely using orbiting satellites, no U.S. mission has yet successfully drilled for it. Earlier this year, Intuitive Machines’ mission failed to land a water-hunting drill on the moon due to terrain challenges.
China’s Chang’e-6 mission successfully returned lunar samples from the far side of the moon in 2024, marking a world first. The upcoming Chang’e-7 was expected to build on this achievement by exploring the south pole, a region NASA also targets with missions planned for late 2026, including Astrobotic Technologies’ Griffin lander and Blue Origin’s lunar lander.

The agency did not specify when the mission might be rescheduled, stating only that the decision was made to ensure mission success. The postponement reflects a cautious approach following recent launch anomalies and underscores the technical and operational challenges of deep-space exploration.
