Lesley Vogel, Panettiere’s mother, publicly addressed her daughter’s death for the first time on August 23, stating in an interview with ABC News that she hoped Panettiere would be remembered as a talented, beautiful, outgoing, and intelligent woman. Vogel’s remarks came during a segment scheduled for Good Morning America on August 24.
The Greenville City Police Department is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration, according to sources familiar with the matter. A police report obtained by ABC News indicated Panettiere was with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, when she was found.
Hickerson and his brother, Zach, called 911 after discovering Panettiere unresponsive, per the report. Hickerson later provided authorities with a bag containing medication Panettiere had allegedly been taking.

In her first public comments since Panettiere’s death, Vogel emphasized her daughter’s professional and personal qualities. “I want Hayden to be remembered for the talented, you know, beautiful, outgoing, intelligent woman she really was,” Vogel told ABC News.

In a May interview with ABC News, Panettiere described efforts to maintain a relationship with her mother as “tough,” stating she had left “the door open” in hopes of a healthier dynamic. “It’s obvious that that’s just not going to be the case,” she said.
Vogel responded at the time by telling Page Six she had chosen a “no-contact route” after consulting professionals. In a later statement to Entertainment Tonight, Vogel reiterated that her estrangement from Panettiere was not due to a lack of care but rather the involvement of what she described as a “toxic individual.”

Beth Chamberlin, Panettiere’s former co-star on the soap opera Guiding Light, shared her perspective on the actress’s struggles and potential. Chamberlin described a “special bond” with Panettiere and referenced comments from actress Viola Davis, who had expressed anticipation of Panettiere’s future work. “I think that puts it best because I think that’s how I was feeling too,” Chamberlin said.
