Genesis, the Hyundai Motor Group’s stand-alone luxury brand, has grown rapidly by combining the agility of a startup with the resources of a multinational automaker. In 2015, Hyundai spun Genesis into an independent luxury brand, marking a decade since its origins as a Hyundai model introduced in 2008. Since then, Genesis has expanded from sedans to include SUVs, electric vehicles (EVs), and performance models, achieving five consecutive years of record global sales.
Ted Mengiste, Genesis North America’s COO, described the brand’s early years as operating from the "ground floor." When he joined Hyundai five years ago, his team consisted of 37 employees, tasked with building processes, go-to-market strategies, and reporting systems from scratch. Today, Mengiste oversees a team of approximately 200 employees, reflecting Genesis’s growth while maintaining its startup-like flexibility.
Genesis’s hybrid model: autonomy with corporate backing
Genesis operates as an autonomous business unit within Hyundai Motor Group, with dedicated teams for marketing, product development, brand strategy, and sales planning. This structure allows the brand to pivot quickly, a hallmark of startup culture, while leveraging Hyundai’s financial and operational resources. Mengiste emphasized the advantages of this dual approach: "When you have that type of, not just economic and investment backing, but the level of talent and experience to draw on, I think it gives you confidence to be bold and daring."
The brand’s portfolio has evolved significantly since its inception. Genesis began with the 2008 rear-wheel-drive sedan under the Hyundai name, a departure from the automaker’s reputation for affordable, mass-market vehicles. After becoming an independent brand in 2015, Genesis expanded into SUVs and EVs, positioning itself to compete with established luxury automakers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The company’s growth trajectory has been marked by consistent sales records, underscoring the success of its hybrid model.
