Democratic state Representative Angie Nixon won Florida’s Democratic Senate primary on Tuesday, defeating establishment-backed centrist candidate Alexander Vindman in a contest that highlighted divisions within the state party. Nixon, who secured the nomination with backing from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), will face incumbent Republican Senator Ashley Moody in the November general election.
The Florida Democratic Party (FDP) issued a statement titled “United in Hope for Florida”, calling for party unity ahead of the general election. The statement framed Nixon’s victory alongside gubernatorial nominee David Jolly as a “dynamic ticket” positioned to challenge Republican leadership in the state. The FDP emphasized shared policy goals, including universal healthcare, public education reform, and lowering costs, while affirming support for all down-ballot Democratic candidates.
Nixon’s primary win has drawn attention to her policy positions, which include abolishing the Electoral College, supporting ranked-choice voting, and same-day voter registration. These stances, highlighted in resurfaced clips from a March 14 podcast appearance, have become focal points in the general election narrative. Nixon also expressed support for abolishing the Senate filibuster during the same discussion. Florida currently prohibits same-day voter registration, requiring registration to be completed ahead of Election Day.
Party tensions emerged publicly after Nixon’s victory, with reports of a heated phone call between Nixon and FDP Chair Nikkie Fried. According to reporting by Axios, Fried raised concerns about Nixon’s ties to the DSA during the call, which Nixon interpreted as an attempt to manage her campaign. Nixon later criticized Fried for contacting her after the primary, alleging the FDP had not supported her campaign initially. Fried had previously been expected to back Vindman, who raised significantly more campaign funds.
If elected, Nixon would become the only DSA member in the U.S. Senate, according to her campaign. Her platform has centered on expanding healthcare, childcare, and education, as well as addressing affordability issues. Nixon joined the DSA in June 2024 and has framed her candidacy as a challenge to establishment politics in Florida.
