Actress Jennifer Garner has spoken about her financial concerns following her divorce from Ben Affleck and her decision to prioritize motherhood over her acting career. In a recent interview, she described feeling panic about her financial future after stepping back from Hollywood to raise their three children.
Garner, 54, and Affleck, 54, finalized their divorce in 2018 after separating in 2015 following a decade of marriage. The couple shares three children: Violet, 20, Fin, 17, and Samuel, 14.
Immediate financial reassessment
During an appearance on the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast, Garner said she initially felt unprepared for the shift in her career trajectory after focusing on parenting. She noted that her industry does not guarantee long-term financial stability, particularly as actors age.
"I panicked when I was first out of my marriage and realized I had taken such a step back in my work," Garner said. "Suddenly I realized, like, I don't know how long I'll be able to work. This isn't a career that's like, hey, you're 60, you're 55, you're 43—come on, let's pay you more than you've ever made. That's not been traditionally the role."
She added that the end of her marriage forced her to reconsider her priorities, balancing financial security with being present for her children.
Balancing career and family
Garner explained that her decision to step back from extensive film shoots was driven by her commitment to her family. She acknowledged the trade-offs between her career ambitions and her role as a mother.
"I can't leave these kids for six months at a time," she said. "I would love to. I love going on location, but it's not this time in my career."
She described the period as a time of gratitude for having the opportunity to prioritize her children while maintaining some professional work, though she acknowledged the challenges of financial independence post-divorce.

Following her divorce, Garner and her longtime manager adopted a calculated approach to her career, ensuring she could remain close to home while rebuilding her earning potential. She emphasized the need to take care of herself and her children independently.
"I was suddenly like, wait a minute, I have to take care of myself. I have to take care of these kids. So what is it going to be?" she said.
