New York Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin III was carted off the practice field Tuesday after suffering an apparent right knee injury during a one-on-one drill.
The incident occurred when Austin’s knee buckled during a drill with cornerback Deonte Banks. Trainers attended to him immediately, and he was transported off the field by cart. Team owner John Mara was seen approaching Austin on the cart to offer support, according to multiple reports.
The Giants’ entire practice session was paused as teammates gathered in a circle for a moment of support. The team has not yet confirmed the severity of the injury, and Austin is expected to undergo further medical evaluation, including an MRI, to determine the extent of the damage.
Austin’s role with the Giants was expected to be significant this season after signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract in the offseason, with incentives that could increase the total value to $4.5 million. He was brought in to replace Wan’Dale Robinson’s production in the slot position following Robinson’s departure to the Tennessee Titans in free agency.
Austin had performed well in training camp and preseason, positioning himself for a larger role in the Giants’ offense. Over his three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he appeared in 48 games, recording 84 receptions for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns, while also serving as an effective punt returner. Last season, he contributed 31 catches for 372 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games.
The Giants have not yet provided an update on Austin’s status or a timeline for his return. The team’s next steps will depend on the results of his medical evaluations.
If Austin is unable to play, it could create an opportunity for Odell Beckham Jr., who re-signed with the Giants in June and has been competing for a roster spot. Beckham’s experience and skill set could allow him to step into a larger role in the offense, particularly in the slot position.
