A British Army battalion tasked with testing uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs) has concluded that while these systems can be useful, they are not universally effective in combat scenarios. Lt. Col. John Black, commander of the 2nd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, stated that his unit has tested dozens of UGVs and found them suitable only for specific missions due to inherent limitations.
During a recent US Army-led exercise at Fort Irwin, California, Black’s battalion and the 1st Battalion Irish Guards participated in simulated conflict scenarios against a near-peer adversary. The exercise aimed to evaluate the tactical deployment of UGVs, with Black emphasizing that his team tested systems in real-world scenarios rather than just operational tests. “Any use case you can think of, we’ve tried it,” Black said, noting the focus on tactical employment rather than mere functionality.
Key Limitations Identified
British Army assessments highlight several challenges associated with UGVs. Logistical constraints such as weight, power requirements, and navigation difficulties were frequently cited. Many medium- to large-sized UGVs required trailers or flatbed trucks for transport, complicating deployment in dynamic battlefield conditions.
