California Governor Gavin Newsom has listed his Fair Oaks mansion for sale at $7.5 million, according to a listing managed by Sotheby’s International Realty agents Matthew Hindy and Nick Sadek. The Spanish-style estate, purchased for $3.7 million in 2019, spans 8.2 acres and includes seven bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, a 5,000-bottle wine cellar, a resort-style pool, a private tennis court, and a cold plunge pool.
Newsom, who will conclude his second term in January 2027, has not confirmed whether he will seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, though the sale has drawn renewed speculation about his political future. The governor and his family moved into the property in 2019 as a “more kid-friendly” alternative to the historic governor’s mansion in Sacramento, which Newsom did not occupy. The family has since split time between the Fair Oaks estate and a residence in Marin County, where their children attend school.
The 12,000-square-foot home, built in 1984, has been a focal point for both political activity and public protest. In 2020, demonstrators chained themselves to the property’s fence to protest rising prison deaths during the coronavirus pandemic. In 2024, Newsom hosted a political fundraiser at the estate for Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who was then campaigning as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate.
The sale comes amid a post-pandemic housing market where prices surged due to low inventory and historically low borrowing costs, though it is unclear whether Newsom made any upgrades to the property since its purchase. The listing does not disclose whether the estate will remain on the market through Newsom’s term end.
