U.S. Marshals in Las Vegas captured Zymire Hughes, 22, on Tuesday evening, bringing an end to a regional manhunt initiated after authorities say he terrorized multiple people in Philadelphia’s Center City while wearing a distinctive mask.
Hughes, who was taken into custody around 8 p.m. in Las Vegas, is now being held at the Clark County Detention Center pending extradition to Pennsylvania, according to the U.S. Marshals Service Nevada Violent Offender Task Force. His arrest follows a series of early-morning incidents in Philadelphia on August 12, during which police allege he approached and threatened at least six people over a 15-minute span.

Police reports indicate the encounters began around 5:18 a.m. near 15th and Chestnut streets, where Hughes allegedly ran toward multiple individuals, attempting to scare and antagonize them. Surveillance footage shows Hughes entering a Dunkin’ on the 1500 block of Chestnut Street shortly afterward, though he was denied service due to wearing the mask. He later appeared near City Hall’s southwest corner, where he allegedly chased a man on 15th Street and approached a woman jogging at 15th and Market streets.
During one encounter, Hughes reportedly stopped in front of the jogging woman and asked, “Are you ready to die?” The woman fled, sustaining a leg injury in the process, according to Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith. Authorities have stated that Hughes appeared to film the incidents with a cellphone, which was equipped with the light on.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner confirmed last week that Hughes is expected to face aggravated assault charges in addition to other counts, citing the victim’s injuries.
