A tropical disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean is projected to develop into Tropical Storm Dolly within the next 48 to 72 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The system, currently designated AL96, is located a few hundred miles southwest of Cabo Verde and has a 60% chance of formation over the next seven days, down from earlier assessments of 70%. Environmental conditions remain somewhat favorable for development, though forecasters note potential obstacles, including dry air and wind shear, by the weekend.
The storm’s name, Dolly, was predetermined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as part of its rotating six-year naming list for Atlantic tropical cyclones. The name was assigned years ago and is unrelated to the death of country music legend Dolly Parton, which occurred on August 25. The NHC confirmed there are no plans to alter the name, emphasizing that storm naming procedures are strictly governed by international meteorological standards.
Forecasters at the NHC’s Miami-based office stated that if the disturbance organizes further, it could first become a tropical depression before strengthening into Tropical Storm Dolly. The system is moving west to west-northwest across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic, with two potential scenarios emerging: either it weakens due to unfavorable conditions or it survives and turns northward over the Atlantic next week. As of Wednesday morning, no active tropical cyclones were present in the Atlantic basin.
Storm Naming Process
The WMO maintains six rotating lists of names for Atlantic tropical storms, with names used in alphabetical order and alternating between male and female. The lists are reused every seventh year. The current system would be the fourth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, following Tropical Storms Arthur, Bertha, and Cristobal earlier this year. The name Dolly was first included in the Atlantic naming list in 1996 and has no thematic or personal connection to Dolly Parton.
Current Forecast and Uncertainties
The NHC’s latest update indicates that while the system shows signs of organization, its long-term path and intensity remain uncertain. AccuWeather’s lead hurricane forecaster noted that the disturbance’s thunderstorms would need to persist through the day to indicate further development. If it strengthens, it could reach the vicinity of the Lesser Antilles by Sunday, bringing increased showers to the region. Alternatively, it may dissipate due to environmental challenges.
Meteorologists and climate experts have described the timing of the storm’s potential formation as a coincidence, given Parton’s passing. The NHC reiterated that its naming protocols are independent of external events and are based solely on pre-established criteria.
