Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced the company will commit $18 billion in equity investments for the remainder of its fiscal year, deepening its financial involvement in the artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem. The announcement follows a reported $47.9 billion in private company holdings as of late July, more than double the $22.3 billion recorded at the end of the prior fiscal year.
Huang defended the company’s expanding financial support during a CNBC interview, stating that the capital-intensive nature of AI development justifies the investments. 'The cost of building AI and deploying it is very capital intensive,' he said, adding that startups now require tens of billions of dollars to reach profitability—a departure from historical norms.
Nvidia’s investments span multiple sectors of the AI value chain, including model developers, infrastructure providers, and private companies. Recent deals include a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy and a stake in Cloverleaf Infrastructure, both addressing data center land and power constraints. The company has also partnered with Wall Street firms to arrange up to $500 billion in financing for AI infrastructure projects.
Critics have raised concerns about 'circular financing', comparing Nvidia’s financial arrangements to patterns seen during the dot-com bubble. These deals involve Nvidia providing capital to customers who then contribute to Nvidia’s revenue streams, prompting questions about long-term sustainability and potential conflicts of interest.
Nvidia’s expansion comes as major cloud providers like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft develop their own AI chips, intensifying competition in the sector. By diversifying into infrastructure, software, and model development, Nvidia is positioning itself as a central player beyond its traditional chip manufacturing role.
The company’s financial strategy reflects its dominant position in the AI chip market, driven by demand for high-performance computing power to train and deploy large language models. Nvidia’s quarterly earnings, released alongside these announcements, exceeded expectations, reinforcing its financial capacity to sustain such investments.
