William Jewell College junior running back MicahJo Barnett died Saturday after experiencing a medical emergency during the team’s season-opening football game against Fort Lewis College. The incident occurred at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri, where Barnett was pronounced dead following efforts by first responders and medical staff.
The game was immediately suspended, and a vigil for Barnett is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday on the William Jewell campus quad. Barnett, a business administration major from Liberty, Missouri, scored a touchdown earlier in the game before his collapse.

William Jewell College confirmed Barnett’s death in a statement, expressing grief for the community and his family. The college’s interim president, Dr. Drew Van Horn, thanked first responders, including the sheriff’s office, police department, EMS team, and team physician, for their rapid response. "Our hearts are heavy and we just appreciate all the support that we have received from the greater community," Dr. Van Horn said.
Fort Lewis College also issued a statement, extending condolences to Barnett’s family and the William Jewell community. The school’s athletics director, Shawn Jakubowski, noted that counseling staff reached out to the Fort Lewis football team to provide support.
Background & Athletic Career
Barnett, a junior, had started five games for William Jewell in the 2025 season before a season-ending injury. In high school, he helped lead Liberty North High School to a state championship. He was pursuing a business major and is survived by six siblings.
The cause of Barnett’s medical emergency has not been disclosed by either school. Both William Jewell and Fort Lewis College have not provided further details regarding the incident, citing respect for the family’s privacy during this time.
