United Airlines and American Airlines have announced a combined nine new nonstop transatlantic routes using the Airbus A321XLR, with tickets now available for booking ahead of launches next year. The aircraft, a long-range variant of the A320 family, enables airlines to serve smaller international destinations that previously required wide-body jets.
United Airlines will operate routes to Marseille, France; Ljubljana, Slovenia; and seven other cities, with the first flights scheduled for December 1. The airline has ordered 50 A321XLRs, configuring its cabin with 32 premium seats and 150 total seats. American Airlines also revealed new routes, though specific destinations were not disclosed in the announcement.
The A321XLR extends the range of the standard A321neo by 800 miles, allowing flights of up to 11 hours nonstop. Its single-aisle design reduces operational complexity, as pilots require only brief training due to shared controls with other A320-family jets. Airlines highlight the aircraft’s fuel efficiency, with a 30% reduction in fuel burn per seat compared to previous-generation models.
Cabin features vary by airline but include lie-flat business class seats, 4K OLED screens for passengers, and Bluetooth connectivity. United’s configuration includes a new Polaris suite with a privacy door, while American’s layout was not detailed in the announcement. The jet’s design also supports sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with current operations capable of using 50% SAF and a goal to reach 100% by 2030.
Beyond transatlantic routes, the A321XLR has enabled new transcontinental and cross-country flights in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Wizz Air operates six XLRs but uses them on routes similar to standard narrow-body flights, differing from the long-haul focus of U.S. carriers.
Airlines and industry analysts note the A321XLR’s role in expanding air travel accessibility to mid-sized cities, where demand may not justify wide-body aircraft. The aircraft’s flexibility and efficiency are expected to shape future long-haul route strategies, particularly for carriers seeking to optimize capacity and cost.
