Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for 148,663 Mustang vehicles from 2024 to 2026 due to a potential electrical wiring issue that could result in a loss of drive power or disrupt other functions, including headlights, windshield washers, air conditioning, or the engine cooling fan. The recall was announced following an investigation by Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters between August 31 and September 4, 2024, with additional letters to follow once a remedy is available. The recall repair—replacement of the engine compartment wiring harness ground terminals—will be performed free of charge at Ford or Lincoln dealerships. The corrective action is expected to begin by March 31, 2027.
The issue stems from a heat shrink modification added to the wiring harness starting with 2024 model-year production, which could cause the ground eyelet terminals to fatigue and fracture. Ford reported that eight warranty claims related to this condition were identified between June and July 2024. As of the recall announcement, no accidents, injuries, or reports of crashes have been linked to the defect.
The recall includes Mustang models produced between September 7, 2022, and June 9, 2026. Federal regulators estimate that 1% of the affected vehicles may exhibit the defect. The NHTSA has assigned the recall the identifier 26V547, while Ford’s internal recall number is 26C40.
In a separate but related action, Ford is also recalling 10,001 vehicles from the 2026 model year, including the Explorer, Bronco, Bronco Sport, Mustang, and Ranger, for a separate potential loss of drive power issue. This second recall was announced in the same NHTSA report.
Ford stated that corrective measures to address the wiring harness issue were introduced in June 2024. The automaker emphasized that the recall is a proactive safety measure and that no confirmed incidents have occurred as a result of the defect. Owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact their nearest Ford or Lincoln dealership for further information or to schedule repairs.
