LONDON — Ariana Grande concluded her 41-show “Eternal Sunshine Tour” on September 1 in London, marking the end of her current public performance schedule and a planned withdrawal from public-facing work. Jonathan Bailey, her co-star from Wicked, announced he would also step back from a West End production in solidarity with Grande’s decision.
The singer addressed the audience at London’s O2 Arena in an emotional farewell, expressing gratitude for the tour’s conclusion. Grande stated, “This has been one of the most beautiful, extraordinary experiences of my life. I’ll cherish this experience always.” She acknowledged the difficulty of speaking without becoming emotional, saying, “I just wanted to express my gratitude without sobbing completely.”
Grande’s representatives confirmed in August that she would take a break from visibility following the tour, citing the need to address ongoing public scrutiny. A statement from her team said she aimed to finish the tour “on a high note, both healthily and happily,” before stepping back from public-facing work.
During the final performance, Grande performed in knee-high boots instead of her signature heels after sustaining a foot injury. She revealed on social media that she had a “deep cut” on her foot, requiring bandaging and temporary use of cozy footwear. Grande reassured fans that she was recovering and able to perform, though she noted the injury would affect her stage presence.
The tour, which began in Oakland, California, in June, promoted Grande’s 2024 album of the same name. She had previously described the shows as “one last hurrah” and expressed interest in pursuing more acting roles. Grande was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Glinda in the musical film Wicked and had been set to reunite with co-star Jonathan Bailey in a London revival of Sunday in the Park With George next summer. Bailey announced his withdrawal from the production on September 1, stating his support for Grande’s decision.
Grande’s final words to the crowd emphasized her appreciation for fans’ efforts throughout the tour. She said, “Thank you for all of your effort and continuing to make this so special. I have loved every minute of this with you all.” The concert concluded with a sci-fi-themed finale, featuring Grande ascending to a “mothership” in a beam of light.
