New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo revealed in a recent interview that he briefly considered retiring from the NFL after suffering a season-ending leg injury in Week 8 of the 2025 season.
Skattebo, who played just seven games before the injury, sustained a right ankle dislocation, open fracture of the tibia, fractured fibula, and ruptured deltoid ligament during a tackle by Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun at Lincoln Financial Field. The injury abruptly ended his rookie campaign, which had shown early promise with 410 rushing yards, five touchdowns, 24 receptions, 207 receiving yards, and two receiving scores.
In an interview with NFL reporter Kay Adams on Up and Adams, Skattebo described the psychological toll of the injury, stating that retirement crossed his mind shortly after the incident. "Yeah, definitely," he responded when asked if he had considered stepping away from football. "The first month was kind of like, ‘Damn, do I really wanna do this?’"
Skattebo’s self-imposed rule played a central role in his initial reaction. He explained that he had set a personal guideline before entering the NFL: "Coming out of college, going to the NFL, I think I gave myself one rule and it was if I ever got a major injury, I was done playing." The injury occurred just seven games into his professional career, leaving him conflicted about his future.
Despite the setback, Skattebo later expressed resolve to return. "It was seven games, I was like, ‘I got to go back and play,’" he said. "Yeah, there’s no shot. There’s no different story. No, it was the end of the year and I was like, ‘OK, I’m over this,’ you know, and I didn’t feel that way at all."
The recovery process became a turning point for Skattebo, both athletically and personally. "I think that really helped me find who I am as a player and as a person," he reflected. His comments highlight the mental resilience required to overcome such a severe injury in a physically demanding sport.
The Giants have not publicly commented on Skattebo’s long-term status following the injury, and his return timeline remains uncertain. Skattebo’s experience underscores the broader challenges faced by athletes navigating the physical and emotional demands of professional football.
