A Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine’s SBU security service in central Kyiv on Friday, injuring at least seven people and causing heavy black smoke to rise over the city center, Kyiv’s mayor reported.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the drone was deliberately aimed at the office of the SBU chief, vowing a "tangible" retaliatory strike against Russian targets once preparations are complete. The attack occurred amid Russia’s tenth consecutive day of drone and missile strikes on Kyiv, which have targeted both military and civilian infrastructure.
Immediate Impact and Response
Emergency services, including ambulances and firefighters, rushed to the scene near the historic Saint Sophia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Local reports indicated that a nearby bakery, Zavertailo, was also damaged in the strike. Zelensky confirmed that the SBU building on Volodymyrska Street was directly hit, with thick black smoke visible from the explosion.
Kyiv’s mayor stated that at least seven people were injured, though it remained unclear if SBU personnel were among them. Zelensky, speaking on Telegram, described the attack as a deliberate targeting of the SBU leadership and ordered a proportional response.
Escalation in Hostilities
The strike follows six straight days of heavy Russian aerial assaults on Kyiv, which have included attacks on residential buildings, universities, and civilian logistics hubs. On Thursday, a Coca-Cola bottling plant outside Kyiv was also struck, injuring 13 people. Zelensky characterized the attack as a "clear Russian signal to America," noting that the facility is an American enterprise.
Separately, a Russian drone destroyed a Nova Poshta logistics depot in Dnipro, killing one employee and wounding five. The company, Ukraine’s largest private delivery service, condemned the attack as targeting civilian infrastructure.
Context and Broader Conflict Dynamics
The SBU, Ukraine’s security service, plays a critical role in the war effort, conducting deep strikes against Russian military and energy infrastructure. The attack on its Kyiv headquarters marks an unusual escalation, as government buildings have rarely been directly targeted in previous drone and missile strikes.
Zelensky’s pledge of retaliation aligns with Ukraine’s broader strategy of responding to Russian aggression with targeted strikes inside Russia. Reports indicate Ukrainian forces have intensified drone operations, including an attack on a military-industrial facility in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic, over 800 miles from the front lines.
Russian officials have not commented on the strikes. The Kremlin has previously accused Ukrainian intelligence of involvement in attacks on Russian territory, including the assassination attempt on Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, a senior commander in Russia’s nuclear strike force.
