Burger King has introduced a revamped version of its chicken nuggets, addressing longstanding customer criticisms of the product’s texture and flavor. The updated nuggets, released on September 1, feature a crispier exterior, a more flavorful marinade, and new cardboard clamshell packaging, according to the company.
The changes follow a broader initiative by Burger King to modernize its menu and improve the dining experience. In February, the chain updated its signature Whopper, replacing its paper wrapping with a sturdier box, introducing a new bun, and debuting a "creamier" mayonnaise to address complaints about squished burgers during transit. The Whopper updates were cited as a factor in the company’s reported 8.5% year-over-year increase in U.S. same-store sales for the second quarter, with a 20% rise in Whopper sales compared to the prior period.
During an earnings call in August, Burger King highlighted its focus on menu upgrades and operational improvements. Chief marketing officer Joel Yashinsky stated in an April interview that the chain has spent the last four years enhancing restaurant operations, technology, and food quality. "We've been really working the last four years to improve the restaurant experience — our operations, our technology in the restaurants, remodeling — and we're also elevating our food," Yashinsky said.
The new nuggets are the latest in a series of menu revisions aimed at addressing customer feedback. Prior to the nuggets’ overhaul, social media and consumer reviews frequently described the original recipe as 'dry,' 'rubbery,' and 'disappointing.' The updated version aims to address these concerns while maintaining the product’s affordability and accessibility.
The packaging change, which includes a cardboard clamshell box, mirrors the approach taken with the Whopper update. The new design is intended to preserve food quality during transport and improve presentation. Burger King has not disclosed additional details about the marinade or cooking process changes beyond emphasizing the enhanced flavor profile.
The company has not announced further menu updates but has indicated that the nuggets and Whopper revisions are part of a broader strategy to modernize its offerings and align with evolving consumer preferences.
