Green Party co-deputy leader Mothin Ali has been linked to two rental properties in Leeds, despite his party’s policy advocating for the abolition of private landlords.
Ali, a Leeds city councillor, is the sole director of MA Holdings, a company that purchased the properties in June 2022 and March 2025 using buy-to-let mortgages. The purchases occurred before the Green Party adopted its policy to phase out private landlordism in October 2025. The company’s business activities include buying, selling, and letting real estate, as well as property management.
A Green Party spokesperson stated that Ali acted solely in the interests of vulnerable close family members for whom he has caring responsibilities. The party declined to disclose further details, citing Ali’s request to protect his family’s privacy. The BBC reported that the previous owner of one property confirmed it was purchased with the intention of being let out.
Ali has served as co-deputy leader of the Green Party in England and Wales since September 2024. He has stated that he declared ownership of his first property to Leeds City Council.
Green Party’s Policy on Landlords
The Green Party passed a motion in October 2025 to implement a policy titled ‘Abolish landlords’, aiming to phase out private landlordism through regulation and taxation. The policy seeks the ‘effective abolition of private landlordism’, though its implementation timeline and mechanisms remain unspecified in the reported sources.
The party’s leadership has not publicly addressed whether Ali’s property ownership conflicts with this policy. A Green Party spokesperson reiterated that Ali’s actions were motivated by family care responsibilities, without elaborating on how this aligns with the party’s stance.
Property Details and Tenancy
The first property, a three-bed former council house in Gipton, Leeds, was purchased for £165,000 in June 2022. The second property, also in Gipton, was bought for £157,000 in March 2025. Rental prices in the area typically range from £1,000 to £1,300 per month, though Ali has not disclosed the current rental amounts for either property.
The previous owner and resident of the second property confirmed to the BBC that the purchase was made with the intention of letting it out. Companies House records show that MA Holdings was incorporated in December 2021, with Ali listed as the sole director and majority shareholder, owning over 75% of the company.
